Performance under pressure from
dewpointmeter

Michell Instruments has launched a new S4000 precision dewpointmeter, which offers a pressure rating to 10barg, enabling operators to measure pressurised industrial air and gas streams The ability to measure gas under pressure also extends the operating range of the system far beyond that of earlier models, for example, allowing an equivalent dewpoint of -74C to be measured at 10barg

The S4000 precision dewpointmeter uses fundamental cooled mirror technology to measure the moisture content of a gas.

During operation, a polished metal mirror is cooled by an in-built Peltier heat pump until dew forms on the mirror surface.

The temperature at which the dew forms (the dewpoint or frostpoint) is maintained by a closed loop optical system, which senses the dew by a reduction in the intensity of light reflected by the mirror.

When the pressure of the gas under test is increased, the water vapour pressure is also increased, which, in turn, raises the dewpoint temperature of the gas.

For example, compressed air systems working at 7barg will have a significantly higher dewpoint than the same air when expanded to atmospheric pressure.

Consequently, any water vapour in a pressurised system is far more likely to condense out at high pressures, making the pressure dewpoint even more significant.

As a result, the ability for a reference grade instrument such as the S4000 to measure a pressure dewpoint is particularly important.

The new S4000 is available in four models, which cover the full humidity range from 10ppb to saturation at +80C dewpoint.

In addition, each unit has the ability to accept a 4-20mA signal from an external pressure transducer to allow the instrument to compensate for the pressure of the sample, correcting the measurement value back to an equivalent atmospheric dewpoint.
