Kabelschlepp Metool has been chosen to supply hydraulics specialist TA Savery and Co with cable reels for the largest and most complex hydraulic ring main system ever installed in the UK.

Kabelschlepp Metool has been chosen to supply hydraulics specialist TA Savery and Co with cable reels for the largest and most complex hydraulic ring main system ever installed in the UK.

The system has been designed for the DARA's (Defence Aviation and Repair Agency) "super-hangar", currently under construction as part of "Project Red Dragon" at St Athan in South Wales.

The new super-hangar is a 20,000m2, high-technology aircraft servicing and support facility for military fighters and training aircraft.

The Metool cable reels will be used to carry hydraulic hoses to and from aircraft in the service bays, so that the flaps, rudders, undercarriage and other hydraulic systems can be operated without powering up the main engines.

The independent, computer-controlled hydraulic power system designed and manufactured by TA Savery is fitted to two of the three hangars at St Athan's.

Each hangar has 16 maintenance bays and each adjacent pair of bays share a hydraulic outlet stand so that a total of 16 aircraft have access to the hydraulic service facility at the same time.

Metool has supplied a total of 64 cable reels of two types, to feed and remove mineral oil at temperatures up to 70C from aircraft during maintenance.

The hose are used in pairs and each aircraft is serviced by two pairs.

During maintenance, the aircraft hydraulic system is fed by a high pressure flow line of 1in nominal bore, capable of 345bar working pressure, at a rate of 180 litre/min.

Oil returns along a lower pressure line, with a 1.25in nominal bore, capable of 207bar working pressure.

The reels are supplied complete with hoses.

For the high pressure flow lines, Metool has supplied 32 standard lay, motor-operated, foot-mounted hose reels with 115AC single phase motors for hose recovery.

For the low-pressure return line, Metool has supplied random lay motor-operated, foot-mounted hose reels.

Both sets of reels are capable of reeling 25m of hose including one dead turn and both are supplied with a foot mounted bracket and a four-way roller guide and guide arm assembly.

All reels are manufactured from heavy-duty steel with a galvanised finish.

TA Savery of Birmingham, UK has specialised in hydraulics for over 50 years and has produced a similar system for BAE Wharton.
