Kabelschlepp steel hose and cable carriers have replaced plastic carriers in the heavy-duty horizontal drilling machines designed by Prime Drilling, which are used in the construction industry to avoid the need to excavate and back-fill, particularly under rivers, motorways and buildings.

The application is extremely demanding, as it involves heavy-duty equipment driven by hydraulic power lines delivering approximately 2000 litres of hydraulic oil a minute and fed with drilling muds to create horizontal bores of 1800mm maximum diameter and up to 2km in length.

Plastic chains supplied by another manufacturer were unable to tolerate the conditions and failed repeatedly, so Prime turned to Kabelschlepp, which offers a complete range of chains of every construction - steel, plastic and hybrid from the smallest sizes right up to the largest offshore drag chains ever built.

It was immediately apparent to Kabelschlepp engineers that only a steel chain was capable of withstanding the inordinate mechanical strains, extremes of temperature, impact and abrasion resistance.

After exhaustive trials, Kabelschlepp's steel S1250 proved to offer the best combination of reliability, robustness, and resistance to water, dirt and dust.

The S1250 is supplied in widths from 200 to 450mm and with a chain height of 94mm, which allows two carriers to be mounted one on top of another in the larger machines.

Up to five hydraulic hose assemblies are carried in the Kabelschlepp cable carriers, ensuring precise and reliable control of the power lines.

The Kabelschlepp design also offers the ability to span long distances without sagging, plus ready availability of spare parts through the company's many branches and distributors worldwide.

In addition, Kabelschlepp offers exceptional experience in large and heavy-duty chains, having been involved in the offshore industry since the beginning of North Sea production.

As a result, there is a full range of stainless and galvanised steel designs in the largest sizes - up to 1500mm wide.

Prime machines are used around the world, including Siberia, and so have to withstand a wide range of operating temperatures and conditions.

The system involves drilling a vertical bore hole to a pre-determined depth before turning to the horizontal, continuing for the required distance and then returning to the vertical mode to reach the surface again.

The process begins with a pilot bore hole of 100 to 200mm diameter, after which the drilling head is changed for a larger unit and the process repeated until the desired bore size is reached.

A mixture of water and clay is used to clear away spoil and consolidate the borehole.
