HMIs promise simplified database replacement

A MMI Solutions product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 19, 2004

A novel range of HMIs stores its configuration data on CompactFlash cards to simplify setup and maintenance operations.

Configuration updates or replacement configurations have traditionally needed the configuration software and programming cables in order for the changes to be downloaded to the HMI, usually requiring an engineer to be present during the operation.

However, with the V7 Series of HMIs from MMI Solutions the downloading can either be performed on power up or from a simple menu on the HMI itself.

The key to this is the ability to have the configuration stored on a standard CompactFlash card which can be saved from the unit on completion of commissioning or saving directly to the CF card from V-SFTE the configuration software.

On sites with multiple HMIs, a CompactFlash card can be held by maintenance for each HMI.

If a replacement screen is needed, for example in case one has been damaged accidentally, the maintenance team can simply insert the correct CF card and on power up the configuration is automatically loaded from the CF card to the unit completely removing the need for programming cables, PCs etc.

The CF card can then be removed and stored securely.

For companies that have equipment and installations worldwide, the V-SFTE configuration software has built in tools that enable the engineer to make any changes necessary and then save a binary file directly onto a CF card plugged into a card reader on his PC.

The CF card can then be posted.

This file can then be loaded in the manner described above or by choosing to upload from the CF card via simple on screen instructions.

In all cases the saved binary file cannot be edited by third parties providing a secure environment for backup files.
