Merlin Control Systems has a new and inexpensive range of resistance welding control units with RS232 interfaces For a number of years, Merlin has been selling its popular range of PWC8 weld control units, which are microprocessor-based electronic modules for the control of weld power and time, for spot welding and similar applications

Monitoring units offer low-cost control
Merlin Control Systems has enlarged its range of inexpensive monitoring units by the addition of a flexible, programmable unit intended for the monitoring of power presses, mechanical feeders etc.
Traditionally, such units are set up by the operator using simple pushbuttons to step through a preset sequence of parameters.
Although Merlin will continue to manufacture and sell the manual units, the new version will offer the same range of controller options, but with the addition of an RS232 interface.
As with the existing units, eight welding programs can be stored in internal memory for immediate use, but the new version is intended for use in PLC-based applications for more complex machines.
Weld program parameter screens can be set up in a PLC or HMI system, and the data downloaded to the weld controller as required.
This means that a very large number of programs and parameters can be stored in the PLC's memory.
An added advantage of the new unit is that it is extremely compact, and DIN-rail mounted.
No metalwork is therefore required to install the unit, and as all connections are via a single plug and socket, changing the unit to assist with fault finding takes only a matter of seconds.
Merlin is an Mitsubishi Electric approved "solution provider", and will issue the necessary control software to interface the weld controller to Mitsubishi PLCs, free of charge.
For other makes, information as to the protocol required will be given.
