Yorkshire Water's Naburn Sewage Treatment works in York has undergone a substantial upgrade, and Mono Pumps was engaged to handle the sludge processing element of the works

Yorkshire Water's Naburn Sewage Treatment works in York has undergone a substantial upgrade to improve effluent discharged into the River Ouse Main contractor M J Gleeson Group enlisted the expertise of Mono Pumps, to handle the sludge processing element of the works

Due to the nature of the sludge, which is produced from the aeration process treatment of domestic sewage, movement of the sludge gave the potential for gas locking in the system pipework.

This, together with a high rag content in the sludge and a temperature of 35C made for difficult hydraulic suction conditions.

A duty/standby pair of pumps was required to circulate sludge from two digesters through heat exchangers and back into the digesters.

Mono Pumps recommended the Monobloc B range pump, together with some modifications to the location of the pump to maximise pump efficiency.

Transferring the sludge at a rate of 20l/s and a maximum delivery pressure of 3 bar, the Mono pump has been so successful on this application that the customer has ordered another 4 units, for further digestion plant works on this scheme.

Digestion plant Commissioning Engineer, Ian Hammond said; "The installation has ensured trouble free operation and Mono Pumps has provided a cost-effective high performance solution." The Monobloc B Range is available in a number of sizes and achieves capacities up to 225mü/h and differential pressures up to 24 bar.

The compact design makes it ideal for installation where space is at a premium and for handling liquids of various viscosities, from water to heavy de-watered sludges.

It can also handle fluids containing fibrous, raggy solids, making it particularly suitable for the water and waste water treatment industries.

The rotor drive coupling uses a sealed pin joint developed from a design proven on many thousands of applications.

Reliability is further enhanced by the fact that Mono Pumps manufactures its own rotors and moulded to metal stators for the Monobloc B range, resulting in total control over tolerances during manufacture, and consistent high performance.

Gearbox/motor drive options are flange mounted, with a plug-in shaft fixing to facilitate ease of assembly and dismantling.
