Moeller Electric has added a new programmable logic controller to its well-established and successful PS4 range, specifically aimed at the building services market

Moeller Electric has added a new programmable logic controller to its well-established and successful PS4 range The new PS4-271-MMI, which operates directly on either 230V AC or 115V AC lines, is specifically aimed at the building services market and can be used as a stand-alone building controller for controlling and monitoring central heating, air-conditioning, lighting, illuminated signs, extraction fans and water systems

The compact, cost effective unit can be simply and easily expanded either locally or remotely via a variety of network interfaces.

These allow it to be used with distributed I/O in large plants or buildings and as part of an integrated building control system.

Trevor Blevins, Moeller Electric's automation product manager comments: "Energy saving is an important issue in the running of a building, given that operating and maintainting heating and ventilation systems are a significant cost.

The PS4-271-MMI provides much improved levels of control and through this brings increased energy savings.

As the new PLC is a piece of industrial standard equipment it has inherently high reliability and design integrity, two factors essential in buildings where functional control is very important." The PS4-271-MMI features 12 digital inputs and eight digital outputs that can also be directly connected to the required AC voltage.

There are four analogue inputs, two of which can be used as current or voltage inputs, and two as resistor inputs for Pt1000 or Ni1000.

Direct connection to the majority of common temperature sensors in use today means that the new PLC can be used for the direct control of lighting and entry systems.

The four analogue outputs provided can be used for voltage and current outputs.

The high power 12A relay outputs enable direct connection to a host of devices without the need for interfacing relays, unlike most competitive PLCs.

User memory capacity of the PLC is 24Kbyte with a useful additional 32Kbyte available.

The cycle time for the unit is 1ęs, and there is also an on-board real time clock.

The unit's integrated interfaces give the PLC a high degree of flexibility.

Two separate interfaces, RS232 and RS485, are provided for networking and programming, they can both also be used for transparent data communication.

Remote control of the system is possible via modem, allowing users to dial into the installation from a remote location and monitor or set up the parameters for the building via Moeller's specially developed building control software toolbox.

In this way any number of sites can be controlled from one location.

The unit can be connected as a slave to a network with up to eight Suconet stations via a Suconet K interface.

Optionally available are Profibus DP (slave), Profibus FMS and Telecontrol IEC 870-5 interfaces.

The new PS4-271-MMI is fully compatible with the other members of the PS4 family and can be used with the wide variety of automation accessories from the Moeller range.

Installation and set-up of the new PLC is extremely simple using the Sucosoft S40 suite of programming software.
