Modular Automation, the assembly automation company from Birmingham, has used simple engineering ingenuity to develop a new assembly machine for Nastech, a large 1st tier automotive supplier in the Midlands, that has the flexibility to assemble multiple product variants with minimum retooling This has produced a cost-effective manufacturing process that is virtually 'future proof'

The system assembles automotive steering components.

The design specification required that the system be capable of handling various types of component to accommodate vehicle model changes and future development.

Although commercial restrictions do not allow a detailed description of the product or process it can be revealed that the system consists of two machines which use a series of automatic and manual stations to build up the assembly.

The system also includes a curing process for adhesive, an inkjet printing station and a reject station for components that fail the built-in testing procedures.

The Modular Automation system derives its flexibility from the gripping mechanisms employed which hold the workpieces in such a way as to avoid obstructing the critical, variant areas.

In this way, variant models or product developments can be accommodated without complex or time-consuming adjustments to the machine.

Modular Automation has vast experience at developing innovative assembly systems using a modular approach and trusted technology.

By approaching its business in this practical way it ensures that its systems are realistically priced, effective and utterly reliable.
