A high performance reciprocating shaft seal supplied by Moontown has doubled the useful operating life of piston pumps manufactured by a major European company.

A high performance reciprocating shaft seal supplied by Moontown Ltd has doubled the useful operating life of piston pumps manufactured by a major European company.

The seals, which can be retrofit into the existing seal housings, are the type M60 premium filled PTFE spring energised products.

They replace conventional rubber U cup seals which were giving 3000 hours operation before failure.

Productive working time has now been effectively doubled, with the cost difference in the seals paling into insignificance compared to enhanced pump performance and savings from the elimination of breakdown time involving pump strip-down and seal replacement.

The pumps, which are fitted with aluminium oxide shafts, provide water as the fluid medium for a wide range of washing operating which includes car cleaning.

They operate at 5 bar pressure with typical high power outputs being from 10 to 45 litres/min.

Depending upon the pump size and duty, the seals operate with shaft strokes from 7mm at 1750rpm up to 65mm running at 500rpm.

The Moontown M60 seals incorporate a metallic spring energiser with low load and high deflection characteristics to compensate for minor shaft eccentricity or misalignment while providing low friction sealing.

The premium filled black PTFE jacket material is machinable, which eliminates the need for size changes to the hardware seal housings.

They are designed for a wide range of dynamic conditions featuring high temperatures, pressures and speed as well as dry running.

Excellent characteristics are exhibited by the jacket material with water and water based solutions.
