Recent development trials carried out at Mollart Machine Tools of Chessington has proven the capability to micro-drill holes just 0.74 mm diameter by up to 40 mm deep, a 54:1 length diameter ratio This level of precision drilling not only confirms Mollart as world leader in the quest for microhole production solutions for fuel injection, medical, electronics and aerospace industries, it establishes Mollart Botek as the prime deep hole drilling tool developer

To achieve this level of small hole drilling demands a consistency of process only obtained from a precision machine tool build and tooling package.

The Mollart horizontal Microdrill machine has been developed to provide consistency of process via a high conformance drive, bearing, coolant filtration, lubrication and spindle package with high quality tool production.

Although the Mollart Botek tooling uses a standard Botek point design, the 0.74 mm diameter solid carbide drill head still has an internal through coolant capability which allows a coolant pressure between 160 and 200 bar to be maintained.

This allows swarf to be effectively cleared and hole penetration rate to be maintained without seizure or breaking.

With the Mollart development, deep hole drilling of fine holes becomes a more economic and viable production solution than the alternative EDM and ECM processes.

Being able to drill such precise holes, new levels of productivity, hole size control and geometry of positioning, breakout, straightness and roundness can now be achieved.
