Molex have launched small form factor pluggable (SFP) connector and cages for use in attaching copper or fibre optic pluggable transceivers and cable assemblies to host equipment.

Molex have launched small form factor pluggable (SFP) connector and cages for use in attaching copper or fibre optic pluggable transceivers and cable assemblies to host equipment Molex's SFP system supports the common design interface for use with multiple data transfer protocols such as Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet and InfiniBand*

The system meets the requirements of standard Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) products, with reduced size and increased data-transfer rates of 2 Gigabits per second (Gbps) or above.

SFP applications include network switches, routers, servers and storage devices.

Mounted on the host pcb and protected by a low-profile metal cage, this system is designed to guide and support the industry-compatible mating module.

Capable of hot swaps with a variety of fibre optic transceivers, copper modules and patch cables, the design is contained within a single pcb connector interface.

The SFP system operates on 3.0 V power supply voltage, 0.5 amps maximum and operating temperatures from -40 C to +85 C.

The 20-position, 0.8mm pitch SMT receptacle is made of UL 94V-0 high temperature thermoplastic, plated in 30 microinches gold over nickel and solder feet within 0.15mm for coplanarity.

A card entry slot accepts 1.0mm thick integrated circuit cards and alignment posts offer secure placement to the pcb.

For simple cleaning after the soldering process, standoffs are also provided.

Receptacles are tape and reel packaged in 480 per reel quantities for SMT robotic placement.

The tin-plated copper alloy cage accepts copper and optical SFP modules and is offered in press-fit and solder-post options.

Available in a one-piece kit or separate cover and base for various assembly processes, cages include two-point spring contact for superior EMI grounding.

A PCI version includes solder posts angled one degree for applications that call for PCI panels.

The flexible design also allows "belly-to-belly" placement when two cages are mounted on opposite sides of the pcb.
