Applied Measurements has been appointed the UK distributor for Monitran's full range of linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) products.

Applied Measurements has been appointed the UK distributor for Monitran's full range of linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) products.

LVDT is a well-established technology employed to detect linear displacements in not only a variety of industrial applications but, increasingly, LVDTs are also being used in consumer goods such as private vehicles.

The current product range comprises three main types, Miniature, Industrial and Economy.

Each type is available in one of four mechanical forms and with one of six electrical characteristics: producing a total range of 72 products - all of which Applied Measurements will now market and sell into the UK.

Neill Ovenden, Monitran's Sales and Marketing Director, comments: "Where linear displacement sensing is concerned, Applied Measurements is closer to the end users than we are".

"We will continue to manufacture existing product and continue developing new LVDTs but to best serve the LVDT markets it makes sense to use an experienced distributor like Applied, who will also provide product development guidance".

Under the distributor agreement Applied Measurements will take on Monitran's existing LVDT business in the UK and receive all future leads.

The manufacture of standard products, the customising of sensors for bespoke applications, stock control and future RandD activities will remain with Monitran, in High Wycombe.

The decision to supply LVDTs through distribution (only) was made by Monitran's new management team and constitutes an integral part of the company's overall strategy to become a total solutions provider in the field of vibration and displacement monitoring.

From Applied Measurements' perspective, taking on Monitran's LVDT product line enables the company to offer a broader range of quality, cost-effective measurement solutions and to grow its business.

The company is actively recruiting as part of its expansion plans.

Peter Lewis, Managing Director of Applied Measurements, says: "There's been an informal understanding between Monitran and Applied Measurements for about six years so it's great that our 'understanding' has now been formalised under Monitran's new management".

"Also, with the sale of LVDTs representing about 16% of our turnover, we're confident this formal arrangement could see us double that figure".

The deal will also lead to shorter delivery times to customers; formalised feedback mechanisms for product queries/feedback; and higher accuracy products.

Ovenden concludes: "It's a win-win-win situation really".

"We get to focus on product development, Applied Measurements gets to grow the LVDT part of its business and the end-users benefit from the combined experiences of both companies".
