Morgan Construction Company has received an order from China Steel Corporation of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, for a major upgrade to its rod outlet of the #2 combination rod and bar mill.

According to Mark Shore, Sales Manager for Rolling Mills, the contract covers the addition and replacement of a number of pieces of equipment to the mill, which was originally built and installed by Morgan in 1987.

Features of the upgrade include the following: addition of Morgan's patented Reducing/Sizing Mill; converting two existing No-Twist Mill stands from 6 to 8in heavy duty; installing a No-Twist Mill by-pass line; the replacement of all existing water boxes for quick change operation; the addition of the Morgan Enhanced Temperature Control System (METCS); new rollerized turndown and laying head units; the complete replacement of the existing level 1 control system and conversion of all existing auxiliary DC motors to AC.

This upgrade," Shore explained, "is designed to improve the quality and production through improved mill utilization and tolerance of the finished rod product.

When completed, it will enable China Steel to produce lower temperature rolled product with a more refined grain structure for enhanced Stelmor processing and reduced annealing times and will enable the mill to increase the speed of its rod outlet to 115 meters per seconds." In addition, he said that when the upgrade is completed, "China Steel will increase its production to the rod outlet to 570,000 tons per year." Morgan is a designer and producer of high-quality rolling mill products and services for the metal industry worldwide.

Since introducing its patented RSM in 1994, the company has installed 35 strands of post-No Twist Mill finishing blocks, of which 22 include RSMs.
