Morgan Construction Company has received a contract from Cheng Ho Hsing Heavy Industries Co to implement multi-slit rolling of rebar as part of a new 14-stand bar mill for Chien Shuin Steel Company.

Morgan Construction Company has received a contract from Cheng Ho Hsing Heavy Industries Co, in Kaohsiung Hsien, Taiwan, to implement the multi-slit rolling of rebar as part of the supply and installation of a new 14-stand bar mill for Chien Shuin Steel Company.

The rebar produced from the slit-rolling process will be four-strand 10mm, three-strand 13mm, and two-strand 16mm to make full use of the 80t/h reheat furnace at the new facility.

In making the announcement, Michael Eldredge, Director, Rolling Mill Engineering, said: "This is the first major contract for the slitting system since Morgan formed an alliance earlier this year with Badische Stahl-Engineering (BSE) of Germany to market the new process".

"As part of the contract", he added, "Morgan will provide roll pass design and guide equipment, while BSE will provide offsite training".

This unique rolling process, which has been in operation at BSE's affiliated company, Badische Stahlwerke, in Kehl, Germany since 1984, has been implemented at various facilities around the world since 1995.

The BSW mill produces over 620kt of rebar per year with over 60% produced using slit rolling.

Eldredge explained that the Morgan-BSE multiple slitting process involves the production of multiple bars in a rolling mill starting from a single billet.

"Through the process, it enables producers to lower their capital costs because a limited number of stands are required for the production of high tonnage".

Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for delivery in June 2004.

When completed, the new mill will produce 500kt of rebar per year.
