Wuhan Iron and Steel has ordered a major upgrade to its existing two-strand rod mill from Morgan Construction Company.

Wuhan Iron and Steel has ordered a major upgrade to its existing two-strand rod mill from Morgan Construction Company.

In making the announcement, Mark Shore, Director of Rolling Mill Sales and Proposals for Morgan, said: "The contract calls for a revamp of the company's existing Morgan/SMS mill originally built in 1996.

The purpose of the upgrade is to improve product quality, both dimensionally and metallurgically, as well as to increase productivity".

The upgrade, which will consist of a revamp to the entire mill, includes modifications to the existing roughing and intermediate mill stands and shears; the addition of four prefinishing mill stands per strand; modification to the Morgan No-Twist mill; the addition of two sets of fixed online reducing/sizing mill, new water boxes throughout the mill; modifications to the existing pinch rolls and laying heads; the revamping of the Stelmor cooling conveyor, which includes additional blowers and latest design nozzle decks; new reform tubs with ring distributors; and METCS, Morgan's proprietary temperature control system for all the water boxes.

With this modification, Wuhan plans to increase their product mix of specialty steels including high carbon products such as tire cord, bearing steel and spring steel.

Shore added: "The equipment, which will be designed at the company's Worcester headquarters, will be manufactured at Morgan's manufacturing facilities in Worcester and Shanghai".

Delivery of the new equipment is scheduled for November 2004.
