Morgan Construction Company, which recently installed a major upgrade for Sterling Steel Company, has successfully commissioned that firm's single-strand rod mill in Sterling, Illinois.

The mill, which had been shut down, was formerly owned and operated by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co.

It was purchased in 2002 by Sterling, a subsidiary of Leggett and Platt.

Now on line, the mill produces 400,000 tons annually for Leggett's wire drawing plants.

According to John Foley, Project Manager: "The upgrade includes the design, manufacture, and installation of a new Stelmor controlled cooling conveyor and high-capacity Morair cooling fans".

"Morgan also provided the electrical motors, drives and controls, as well as the turnkey installation of the equipment".

Noting that that the upgrade is designed to produce quality products, he cited as an example: "The new Stelmor conveyor and fans give Sterling the ability to produce rod with extremely tight metallurgical properties".

This results in higher rod quality and more efficient wire drawing, while allowing increased throughput.

"These finished products", he concluded, "will be used by the other operations of Leggett and Platt, a diversified manufacturer of a broad variety of engineered components and products".
