Morgan Construction Company has been awarded a contract to build two mills for Jindal South West (JSW) Steel, both to be located in Toranagallu, India.

The contract represents the first Morgan mills for JSW as it enters the long products market.

In addition, Morgan will provide the complete automation of both mills.

The rod mill, which will be one of the largest capacity single-strand rod mills in the region, will produce 5.2 to 22mm wire rods with a capacity of 600,000 tonnes.

The mill will be designed for a maximum speed of 120m/s.

The new mill represents "the first reducing sizing mill (RSM) in India as well as Southeast Asia", said S Mark Shore, Vice President, Rolling Mill Sales and Proposals.

"With RSM technology, it will produce a level of quality unparalleled in the region".

"This will be a clear market differentiator for JSW".

The rod mill's start up date is expected to be early January 2008.

The bar mill will produce a product range that includes plain bars, rebars, round corner squares (RCS) and angles, with a 1Mt capacity.

"This mill will be among the fastest rebar mills on the market today", said Ashok Jain, Vice President, Morgan India, which is based in Mumbai.

"This will be a complete high-speed rebar mill with slitting technology".

Commissioning for the bar mill is expected to be in March 2008.

The two mills will be built adjacent to the new steel melting shop being built as a part of JSW's expansion from 4.0 to 7.0Mt at the already existing steel works at Toranagallu, in Bellary District of Karnataka state in India.

"This contract speaks to the strengths and capabilities of Morgan's presence in India", Shore concluded.
