A graduate from UMIST has won the fellowship award established by Morgan Advanced Ceramics to encourage and reward budding materials scientists and engineers.
Daniel McDonald, a graduate from the University of Manchester Materials Science Centre (UMIST) has won the fellowship award established by Morgan Advanced Ceramics to encourage and reward budding materials scientists and engineers.
McDonald was given the award for achieving an exceptional pass rate in his MEng course.
He graduated with a first class degree in materials science and engineering.
Dr Robert Oscroft of Morgan Advanced Ceramics presented McDonald with a certificate and a cheque for GBP 500.
Morgan Advanced Ceramics initiated the University Fellowship Award to encourage students undertaking undergraduate courses to develop their skills in materials and engineering.
The company sees this as an investment in its own future as well as that of the students.
Morgan Advanced Ceramics specialises in ceramic components and assemblies for applications in the medical, telecommunications, semiconductor and aerospace markets.
Developing application-specific ceramics to meet their customers' needs requires people with a thirst for ongoing materials research and product development.
According to Morgan, recognition of academic achievements encourages students to continue their passion for materials engineering as a career.
In order to ensure that students get maximum benefit from the scheme Morgan Advanced Ceramics allows the category under which the award is offered to vary from university to university.
Each department decides on the criteria in conjunction with Morgan Advanced Ceramics and then identifies students to put forward for consideration.
Candidates can therefore be nominated on the grounds of anything from outstanding academic achievement to original research.
Participating universities currently include Oxford, Cambridge, Sheffield, Manchester and Imperial College, London.
The Morgan Advanced Ceramics University Fellowship Award was introduced in July 2002.
