Morgan Advanced Ceramics has developed a range of ceramic-to-metal components for manufacturers of X-ray tubes.

Morgan Advanced Ceramics has developed a range of ceramic-to-metal components for manufacturers of X-ray tubes The power feedthroughs, filament supports, anode, cathode and getter support assemblies (which house the working elements of the X-ray tube) are made using a combination of high purity alumina and metal

The result is components with superior electrical properties and thermal shock resistance that can improve the reliability, durability and operational life of X-ray tubes.

These ceramic/metal assemblies are designed to withstand the high-voltage differentials, up to 150kV, that occur within the tube.

All joints are hermetic, with only specific metals being used.

Most notably nickel iron cobalt and nickel iron because their properties are best suited to the harsh environment created within the tube and they have similar thermal expansion coefficients to the alumina.

Unlike the glass-to-metal assemblies that have traditionally been used, the ceramic-to-metal assemblies can also be produced in a variety of sizes from 3 to 300mm diameter making it ideal for increasingly popular high power scanning devices in the security market.

"Security is at the top of everyone's agenda", explains David Bealka, General Manager, Morgan Advanced Ceramics.

"So the expectations of the technology involved have grown dramatically".

"X-ray systems, whether they are being used for hand luggage or an entire cargo truck need to deliver continuous, reliable results and by developing these new assemblies we are helping make this a reality".

The ceramic-to-metal assemblies and feedthroughs are also well suited to a number of other applications such as medical devices and implants, scientific equipment and aero engine control and monitoring.
