Technology grant to fund graduate in industry

A Morgan Advanced Ceramics product story

Knowledge Transfer grant to develop titanium injection moulding technology for producing medical and biomedical devices will fund a graduate to work in industry for around three years.

Morgan Technical Ceramics and the University of Sheffield have been awarded a £98,504 Knowledge Transfer grant by the Department of Trade and Industry to develop titanium injection moulding technology for producing medical and biomedical devices.

The grant will enable Morgan to join forces with the university's Department of Engineering Materials, funding a graduate to work with Morgan for around three years.

The successful candidate's work will focus on the metal injection moulding of medical-grade titanium, exploring the possibilities for creating net shape, complex geometries for implantable medical devices.

Injection moulding medical grade titanium has process advantages over conventional processes, such as complicated machining for precision-engineered complex parts.

The technology could make the better mechanical properties of titanium affordable for a wide range of medical devices.

Morgan Technical Ceramics' Director, Mike Thomas, said: "This grant presents us with an exciting opportunity to share knowledge and expertise with the University of Sheffield and to develop a technology that will have a significant impact on the medical device market".

Iain Todd of the University of Sheffield's Department of Engineering Materials said: "We are looking forwards to working with Morgan Technical Ceramics on this project".

"It will be a fantastic kick-start to a graduate's career, allowing them to work closely with one of the world's leading materials manufacturers and giving them the chance to see their ideas adopted by industry".
