Hardware features such as power fail detection and battery-backed SRAM enable high-reliability PLC functionality.

MSC Tuttlingen has boosted the CPU performance of its Carat series of embedded computers for integrated PLC/Scada applications.

Each device incorporates all necessary interfaces, including: two RS232/485serial connectors, two USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and a fieldbus module for all current standards, including CANopen and Profibus.

Dedicated hardware features such as power fail detection and battery-backed SRAM will ensure high-reliability PLC operations.

The Carat fanless system is available either as a panel PC with a 12.1 or 15in TFT touchscreen or as box PC in "book format" for cabinet assembly.

All embedded devices provide an ETX CPU module with ULV Celeron M processors (600MHz or 1.0GHz) connected to a dedicated baseboard with up to 1Gbyte of RAM.

Power consumption is typically 16W for the box PC version or 44W for a panel PC with a 15in display.

Windows XP Embedded is configured according to the designed application, installed on a protected internal CompactFlash card.

A second external CompactFlash card can be connected for application software and data.
