Specialist pharmaceutical labelling machinery company, Newman Labelling Systems integrates Meech static eliminator bars into its high-speed, clear labelling machines as a matter of course.

One instance of this application has been in the design of labelling machines for 3ml glass vials of meningitis vaccine with multi-detachable section labels, for use in the world's first mass vaccination programme to protect UK children from the life-threatening meningococcal meningitis C.

Engineering Manager, Kevin Triggs, explains why the effective control of static is vital to the labelling process.

"Many of our machines operate at speeds up to 600 labels per minute, particularly those used for the labelling of antibiotics.

Furthermore, these labels are frequently made of clear plastic, polyester or vinyl, rather than paper.

The process of unspooling labels from the web at high speed creates a static charge which, if left untreated can cause the labels to veer off their proper course and adhere incorrectly to the vials.

Meech static eliminator bars are positioned at the point where the labels are unspooled, so removing the static at source and ensuring that the labelling process continues smoothly".

In addition, certain Newman labelling machines incorporate hot foil printing and this generates a considerable amount of graphite dust.

If the unwanted static caused by unspooling were not neutralised, the black graphite particles would be attracted to the clear labels and adhere to them between the label and the vial, resulting in unacceptable visual contamination.

Again, Newman's incorporation of Meech static eliminator bars removes the static charge before it can cause a problem.

The last word goes to Kevin Triggs, "We have been incorporating Meech static solutions into our labelling machines for over a decade and they really do the job - it's a matter of 'fit them and forget them' - which is what our customers are looking for".
