Software boosts intelligence of smart cameras

A Matrox Imaging product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 4, 2008

The intuitive nature of the Matrox Iris E-Series with Design Assistant eliminates the need for programming and scripting.

New from Matrox Imaging, Design Assistant 2.0 is an updated version of the intuitive, flowchart-based software package for the company's Iris E-Series smart camera.

"With more image processing and analysis tools, the Matrox Iris E-Series smart camera can be deployed in an even greater number of applications, in almost any industry", explains Fabio Perelli, Product Manager, Matrox Imaging.

With Matrox Design Assistant 2.0, users can now create flowcharts of their applications with steps for image processing (arithmetic, filtering, geometric transformations, logic, LUT mapping, morphology, thresholding etc), blob analysis, pattern recognition based on normalised grayscale correlation, and reading character strings.

In conjunction with the steps available in 1.0 (CodeReader, Edge Locator, IntesityChecker, Metrology and ModelFinder), Matrox Design Assistant 2.0 offers all required vision tools for most applications.

Matrox Design Assistant 2.0 now also supports both Ethernet/IPT and Modbus over TCP/IP to interact with PLCs and other process automation equipment.

Finally, Matrox Design Assistant 2.0 also includes a software development kit that allows users to add specific custom functionality.

The Matrox Design Assistant interface draws on Matrox Imaging's two-decade history of imaging software experience.

In the Matrox Design Assistant environment, users create a flowchart of the application that instructs the Matrox Iris E-Series camera to capture, process, analyse and display image data.

The intuitive nature of the Matrox Iris E-Series with Design Assistant eliminates the need for programming and scripting.

Users benefit from simplified application development that offers the same reliability and robustness as the field-proven Matrox Imaging Library.

The development environment is fully self-contained for both application development and deployment, and the integrated HTML editor and layout tool gives users the flexibility to create a custom web-based operator view for monitoring the application.

The Matrox Iris E-Series is a family of smart cameras that support the flexibility of PC-based machine vision systems, and feature hardware for image sensing as well as software for image capture, processing, and analysis.

Matrox Iris E-Series is powered by an Ultra Low Power (ULP) Celeron, an embedded Intel architecture processor, and runs the Windows CE real-time operating system.

Available as a single body or remote head plus processor design, Matrox Iris E-Series smart cameras offer customers a number of options for camera resolution, sensor type, and speed.

The Matrox Iris E-Series with Design Assistant software starts at US $3220 OEM (one-off), and is available now.
