Tablet PCs arrive with broad industry support
The long-held industry vision of pen-based computing this week became a reality as Microsoft and a broad range of computer, software and chip companies announced the availability of Tablet PCs.
They also simplify the exchange of information with desktop applications such as Excel and Outlook, which are familiar in every manufacturing company.
"To gain full benefit from manufacturing data, it must flow freely to where it is needed in a form that everyone can use", said Paul Burgum, Industry Manager for Manufacturing and Engineering at Microsoft.
"When users choose software built on Microsoft platforms, this is possible without spending heavily on new software, consultancy and re-training".
At the Manufacturing Summit, presenters also emphasised the role of XML web services, developed on the Microsoft.NET platform.
By developing web services, Microsoft Partners can give access to data between platforms, including legacy software.
They can then make this information freely available for use in reporting and business information systems which are matched to the users' needs.
"XML web services are a fast simple way to integrate a variety of systems so that the information they contain can benefit the business", said Burgum.
"Independent research has shown that Microsoft is the leader in technology for developing XML services.
The new website helps manufacturer's find applications and suppliers that can use this capability to meet their needs".
The new site can be found at www.microsoftpartnerships.co.uk.
