Although the velvet seal incorporated in every film cassette is a very low-cost item, it forms a critical part of the assembly for the protection of the high-value film.
A perfect seal must be formed between film and cassette otherwise light would penetrate and the whole film would be ruined.
Bradford based Denholm Velvet weave the velvet fabric then convert it into a 9.5mm wide velvet strip ready for despatch to the customer.
The Laser Scan micrometer is used during the slitting process to make sure the strip width is maintained to within 9.5 +/-0.4mm - as required by the film manufacturers to provide a snug fit in the film cassette recess and form a perfect seal.
The Mitutoyo series 544 LSM 503 machine provides high-speed non-contact measurement, making it ideal for in-line measurement.
Having a measuring range of 0.3 - 30mm, with a selectable resolution of 0.00002-0.1mm, the LSM 503 is able to operate with a scanning speed of up to 113m/s.
Prior to investing in the Mitutoyo equipment, Denholm had to manually check the size of strip being produced with a bench gauge - a laborious and inaccurate operation.
This necessitated a halt in production and often led to many spools of material being rejected by the customer due to only part of the reel being out of tolerance.
Several Mitutoyo gauges and measuring instruments were already in use throughout its production areas when Denholm Velvet decided to consult Mitutoyo with a view to installing continuous inspection to its production line.
Many benefits have been gained since the introduction of the new high-speed system, explained Philip Cowen, Production Director at Denholm Velvet: "We supply all the major film manufacturers so the product has to be right.
The laser scan micrometer has not only greatly improved our quality, it has also given our customers reassurance that they are always getting the correct size seal.
It has helped our business grow and at the same time cut down on waste". Request a free brochure from Mitutoyo (UK) ...
