Incoming MTA President, Geoff Lloyd, Managing Director of Heller Machine Tools, delivered his first keynote speech at the MTA Annual Lunch in London on Thursday 12th October 2006.

Setting his priorities for his tenure, Lloyd told his audience that the MTA would "promote skills in manufacturing to young people unashamedly".

"Manufacturing, science and technology are no longer, in our modern world, options".

"They are the fundamental base to our future lives and should be number 1 on our Government's policy agendas".

"Through science our young people will have the tools that underpin everything they do in life and through science our Government will have the technical resources that are needed to cope with global warming, energy provision, healthcare, poverty and the threat of terrorism".

"In each of these areas a manufacturing technology solution will play a key role".

"It is important to encourage our children to consider all further education options and to understand that an apprenticeship in manufacturing can develop them as individuals and provide the skills they will need as the foundation for their future careers".

"An apprenticeship teaches skill, respect, discipline and responsibility, all personal qualities that are required in our ever demanding world-competitive market".

Lloyd continued on the importance of MTA membership saying: "Recruiting and retaining membership is crucial and bringing more diversity into the membership is essential".

"In the last year itself we have increased the membership by 10% and we are delighted this includes our new relationship with BHECTA members".

"A stronger membership gives us more resources and a bigger critical mass which gives us more influence with the outside world".
