Norfolk luxury-yacht-building company Landamores has increased its productivity by over 25% in the last few months, thanks to support from the DTI Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS).

The Wroxham-based company, which has been building boats for over 80 years, contacted MAS in the East of England for a free one-day consultation.

After taking the service's advice and putting new measures in place, it has made dramatic improvements.

Managing director Anthony Landamore said: "MAS East has been very helpful to us".

"It has enabled us to systemise our manufacturing processes and shown us how to apply lean manufacturing techniques to our boat building".

"This has enabled us to shorten our schedules, and build boats faster, reducing build-times from 42 to 30 weeks".

The MAS East Service that helped transform Landamores is available to all manufacturing companies across the UK, but there remain thousands of marine companies not taking advantage of the help on offer to them.

Most manufacturers need only make very simple and straight forward changes in order to make a real difference to their bottom line.

Robert Watson from the Engineering Employers' Federation (EEF) said: "Far from being in decline, manufacturing is a sector that is punching above its weight".

"However, there is no doubt that manufacturers need to adapt to change and take advantage of new opportunities".

"MAS will help them do that - I encourage manufacturers to seek out this sort of support, so they can adapt and compete globally".

Since its inception in 2002, MAS has had an unprecedented impact on the manufacturing community, generating over GBP 277 million in added value for businesses.

MAS operates through 10 regional centres in England and Wales so offers a flexible and adaptable service that is tailored a company's local needs.

Each of these centres have a team of highly experienced specialists with manufacturing backgrounds to help companies utilise more efficient processes, develop longer term strategies and new products and improve ways of using software, materials and workspace.
