Paint strippers help meet EC directive

Metal cleaners are free from aromatic and chlorinated solvents as well as amines or acids, and are ready to use by immersion, removing a wide variety of paints, powder coatings and lacquers.
The Solvent Emissions Directive (1999/13/EC) aims to reduce the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on our environment.
Within this directive certain VOCs, which are classified as either carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction, are required to be replaced by less harmful products in the shortest possible time.
Under the SED the definition for a VOC includes substances that are volatile at room temperature as well as in a heated process.
In particular methylene chloride (classified as R40 - limited evidence of carcinogenic effects) and trichloroethylene (classified as R45 - may cause cancer) are likely to be of concern to metal painters.
These two products are known for their degreasing capability and replacements, such as MacDermid's New Dimension ND-7 Supreme cleaner, have been available for some time for this application.
It is in the use of these solvents for removing paints and lacquers where it has been difficult to find a good alternative.
The Mastrip products from MacDermid now provide that alternative.
Mastrip CE and Mastrip CF are free from aromatic and chlorinated solvents as well as amines or acids.
They are supplied ready to use by immersion, removing a wide variety of paints, powder coatings and lacquers.
The products are for use on all metals, including light alloys, and can be heated to speed up stripping.
Both products offer a long tank life.
During use the product is used to replace drag out losses and a periodic desludge of the tank removes the build up of paint residues.
After desludge the clean solution is returned to the tank ensuring an extended bath life and economical operation.
After stripping the components are rinsed off with water leaving a clean surface ready for reprocessing.
Traditional paint strippers are suitable for steel and other robust metals, but light metals can suffer base metal damage to a greater or lesser degree.
Quite often zinc based die castings are thrown away rather than stripped as the available strippers attack the base metal rendering it unsuitable for repainting.
Mastrip CE can save this waste.
Zinc and aluminium die castings can be stripped using Mastrip CE without any attack on the base metal.
After water rinsing, the components are clean and water break free, ready to be reprocessed.
This also applies to electroplated parts, for example a zinc plated and passivated part can be stripped, without attack of the zinc plate or the passivate, allowing rapid reworking of the part.
Stop off lacquers are applied to allow selective chemical treatment of the metal, for example anodising, selective etching, chemical milling or electroplating.
By their nature, these lacquers have to be chemically resistant and quite often hot trichloroethylene is used to remove them.
Mastrip CF provides a viable alternative to trichloroethylene.
It can strip various stop off lacquers from steels, aluminium and other metals without attack of the base metal or any electroplated or anodised coating.
Mastrip CF will also remove spray, dip and electrophoretic lacquers leaving a clean surface ready for reprocessing.
The use of these strippers opens up many avenues for recycling.
Many manufactured items are taken out of service long before the metal hardware is at the end of its useful life, but stripping and reuse has not been considered due to environmental or economic issues.
Using Mastrip products the metal components can be repainted and reused saving time, energy and cost; and at the same time contributing to recycling obligations required by the EEC.
As examples, alloy car wheels, architectural components and pub gaming machines can all be given a timely makeover and a new lease of life.
