NAFEMS is part of a consortium of organisations that has recently been awarded a grant by the European Commission to undertake a project entitled NUFRIC.

The full project title is "Numerical based medium level training on industrial friction problems".

Its purpose is to help educate engineers in industry who wish to apply numerical methods to help solve problems involving contact and friction.

Software that is currently available makes it feasible to set up problems of this nature with comparative ease, but obtaining results that can be relied on remains a challenging task that can require considerable knowledge and experience.

The project aims to make this knowledge and experience more accessible to those who wish to acquire it.

The first meeting of the project was held at the end of October 2003, at which the initial plans were discussed.

The work will include developing books and other educational materials as well as running a series of technical workshops at various locations around Europe.

The project will involve some 3000 man-days of effort over the next 30 months.

The bulk of this work will be carried out by the lead technical partners: the University of Granada, University of Hanover, CIMNE and the Polytechnic of Turin.

The other partners in the project are EnginSoft Trading, TCN and NAFEMS.
