Within a properly outfitted firearm, the embossing mechanism stamps each shell casing as bullets are fired.

The shell casings then become a valuable forensic tool during an investigation.

The micro embossing stamps may be creatively located in several places.

In the case of the NanoVia test vehicle, a SIG P229 was chosen, and several pieces were identified for optimum test points for the NanoVia concept.

These parts included the firing pin and the barrel/breach area of the handgun.

The first mechanism used to test the theory was the firing pin.

At the end of the firing pin, a simple code was formed using the NanoVia UV laser process.

This code took the form of raised characters, which would emboss the code onto the primer of the shell casing when the handgun was fired.

The firing pin system was tested for more than 30,000 cycles and was not significantly affected by wear.

NanoVia is continuing its research on the breach/barrel concept and will have preliminary results by yearend.

In a recent interview, NanoVia Vice President of R and D Todd Lizotte said, "I can think of no application of our technology more rewarding than aiding law enforcement.

As a gun enthusiast, it is incredibly important to me that the lawful ownership and use of firearms be preserved; every new innovation is important and should be considered".
