National Instruments' award-winning Web site ni.com recently began hosting a series of eLearning courses available to site visitors around the clock.
National Instruments' award-winning Web site ni.com recently began hosting a series of eLearning courses available to site visitors around the clock.
The courses, which users can complete in as little as 20 minutes, or bookmark for a return visit, review fundamental engineering concepts of computer-based measurement and automation.
"With technology improving and changing every day, there is a critical need for engineers to participate in ongoing training in order to keep up," said John Pasquarette, NI director of Web marketing.
"The most common challenge, however, is with finding the time to attend actual training courses.
By introducing eLearning classes online, we are making it easier for engineers and scientists around the world to actively participate in core training courses, while economising their time." The first two training courses, which went live at the end of September, are available 24 hours a day by visiting ni.com/info and entering "tutorials".
They are available free of cost to anyone, are self-paced, and are interactive in nature.
They offer learning opportunities through a variety of multimedia options, including audio, video, and product demonstrations.
Throughout the tutorials, users can "ask an expert" questions about the topic or request a personal visit simply by clicking an option which prompts the user to fill out a pre-addressed e-mail message.
Users also have the option to purchase NI products online while participating.
Both of the initial courses cover computer-based measurement and automation applications common to engineers in industries such as electronics, communications, and industrial machinery.
The FFT module covers fast Fourier transform.
It reviews the basics of frequency measurements and how to improve these measurements using NI measurement and automation software and hardware.
The second unit, Machine Vision and Scientific Image Processing, steps users through the basics of building image acquisition systems and the necessary software and hardware.
Additional courses will be added in the coming months.
NI provides the online tutorials through collaboration with TechOnLine, a leading provider of eLearning solutions and resources for electronics and high-tech companies.
NI created the tutorial content, which was then developed into interactive online course material by TechOnLine's staff of instructional designers and web developers.
Subsequent tutorials on ni.com will also be developed by TechOnLine.
In addition to the online tutorials, ni.com offers other technical training resources.
For example, to research additional information about frequency measurements, image acquisition, or any other measurement and automation topic, visitors can easily search ni.com's thousands of pages of technical data by typing in specific questions at ni.com/support.
The Web site automatically pulls articles and other information based on the content of the questions.
For those who want to discuss their questions with peers, ni.com offers Developer Exchange where users can post technical questions to a worldwide community of engineers and scientists.
Responses to their postings come from other users as well as NI experts on the particular topic.
The variety of technical support services available on ni.com led the Association of Support Professionals in July to name NI among its Top 10 list of companies providing technical support on the Web.
