NBC Group came to the rescue of an international airport recently when it discovered it could not source some slewing rings to maintain a number of its air bridges At one of their busiest periods of the year, it was vital that all the air bridges were available to transport the increased passenger numbers between the terminal and the aircraft promptly and safely

The original supplier of the air bridges was no longer trading and the slewing rings fitted were proving difficult to source as they appeared to be special.

NBC Group Technical Manager, Lester Milton, visited the airport's maintenance team, measured the existing ring and realised part of the difficulty the airport was facing in replacing the slewing ring.

As feared, like many slewing rings used worldwide, the dimensions were unique to the application and certainly not a catalogue, "off the shelf" item.

Speed was of the essence, so after returning to his office, Milton quickly translated his measurements and load rating requirements into a CAD drawing, which was e-mailed to one of the manufacturing facilities NBC Group uses for supplying its slewing rings.

The job was priced and approved by the airport, and the slewing rings were manufactured and supplied within a four-week timeframe without incurring any abnormal costs.
