Nord, the German manufacturer of high-performance gearboxes, gearmotors and associated drive electronics, has opened a new and substantially expanded UK assembly plant.

The new purpose-built factory in the Abingdon Science Park, Oxfordshire, occupies 25,000 ft2 and there are already plans to extend this by a further 7,000 ft2.

Nord's success in the UK had caused the company to outgrow its previous 10,000ft2 manufacturing facility just five years after it opened.

The new factory was officially opened on 15 June in a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Herr G.

A.

Kuchenmeister, managing partner and founder of Nord, and Dr David Allinson, Mayor of Abingdon.

Nord has made an initial investment of over ?2 million in the factory, which includes a ?50,000 paint spraying system with drying tunnel to customise its products.

The spray system has been designed with the environment in mind, as it will accommodate water based paint systems.

The second largest gearmotor manufacturer in Europe, Nord is now represented in 62 countries globally.

The company prides itself on the prompt delivery of its products to local markets and currently offers gearboxes and drives such as helical, shaft-mount, helical bevel, worm and planetary types from 0,12 kW to 200 kW and torque ranges from 10 Nm to 100 000 Nm.

The new Abingdon factory has a potential output of 300 units per day and will therefore ensure prompt delivery of low and medium sized orders to both the UK and Irish markets it serves.

There are now more than 20 other local Nord manufacturing units sited strategically across the world.
