NEEDS 2006 (the National Electrical and Electronics Directives conference) will become the UK's main regulatory compliance event when it takes place at the Birmingham NEC in May.

Compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive has presented the electrical and electronics industries with a difficult transition.
Every aspect of the supply chain is affected by the directive and, to ensure compliance, a huge amount of data needs to be gathered, organised and ultimately stored.
One of the NEEDS conference's most topical seminars will discuss the newly-developed IPC 1752 Material Declaration Management Standard, which simplifies and reduces the cost of collecting compliance data through the supply chain.
The seminar will include a hands-on workshop, plus updates on the RoHS directive itself.
EMC Functional Safety is another key issue for the electronics industry and will be looked at in detail at NEEDS.
Keith Armstrong, of respected electronics design consultants Cherry Clough, will speak on 'EMC for Functional Safety and High Reliability', looking particularly at safety-critical applications such as machinery, vehicles (road, rail, air and marine), medical systems, military equipment and industrial automation.
High reliability across the whole lifecycle of equipment is crucial and preventing electromagnetic interference an important consideration.
As the electronics industry becomes more sophisticated, so the electromagnetic environment is more polluted and the possibilities for interference increase.
This seminar will provide practical engineering techniques for dealing correctly with EMC to reduce risks in a cost-effective way.
A manufacturer's viewpoint will be brought to bear on the Low Voltage directive in 'A Practical Approach for Meeting the Low Voltage Directive'.
The presentation will look at the requirements of the LVD and provide delegates with practical advice on how to comply.
Looking at how products can be assessed for compliance both by manufacturers and importers, how to carry out in-house testing and available certification schemes, the seminar will also cover the issue and retention of the necessary documentation.
The presentation will look at how organisations both large and small can ensure product compliance with the requirements of the LVD, whilst avoiding unnecessary work.
A comprehensive presentation on the Development of Aircraft EMC and HIRF Requirements will provide an interesting workshop for anyone involved in this field, including compliance engineers, testers and designers.
This presentation aims to give delegates an awareness of all aspects of equipment, systems and aircraft EMC/HIRF testing as a route to compliance.
Beginning with the history of aircraft EMC and HIRF, it will cover the reasons why HIRF is important and look at the potential pitfalls and problems of working towards compliance.
Delegates will look at the FAA/European requirements to demonstrate HIRF compliance, particularly in light of the recent release in the Federal Register of the FAA/EASA Harmonised HIRF rule for comment.
Equipment qualification will be another key area of discussion, including proposed changes to DO160/ED14, as will aircraft certification and testing.
The NEEDS conference takes place at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from 16 to 18 May 2006, alongside the Drives and Controls, Electrex and AirTech exhibitions, as well as Subcon, Product Development 06 and the manufacturing showcase MACH.
