Gearboxes sail for London Boat Show

A Newage Transmissions product story

Newage Transmissions' Stepdrive two-speed automatic marine gearboxes will be highlighted as part of the company's presentation at the London International Boat Show in January.

Newage Transmissions' Stepdrive two-speed automatic marine gearboxes - for use with boats fitted with Volvo Penta diesel engines - will be highlighted alongside three other members of the PRM transmissions range as part of the company's presentation on stand S2604 at the London International Boat Show in January.

Developed by Newage as a retrofit product for the Volvo Penta Duoprop 290 drive leg, Stepdrive is particularly suitable for pleasure craft applications.

It fits entirely within the centre section of the Volvo unit and, when operating in top gear, does not affect the leg's overall reduction ratio.

The gearbox has been designed for use with naturally aspirated engines such as the Volvo Penta AD31 and 41 and supercharged units up to the KAD 44.

During acceleration, it automatically changes from low to high gear at a pre-determined engine speed, which is optimised to the individual boat and engine combination.

When the boat slows again, low gear is engaged as the engine speed falls below 1500rev/min.

The transmission's reduction gearing increases propeller efficiency at slow speeds and during acceleration, making it suitable for marginally powered diesel-engined boats or for improving performance if owners switch from petrol to diesel units.

The gearbox's ability to match closely engine torque and power curves frequently lets boats be re-propped to achieve higher top speeds.

Other Newage gearboxes on show at Excel will include PRM 120, 150 and 500 models.

For pleasure boat use, the PRM 120 is for inland waterway applications.

It is lightweight with mechanically actuated, maintenance-free cone clutches for ahead and astern drive.

The gearbox is for standard rotation engines and comes with three drive ratios.

PRM 150 and PRM 500 are for engines rated at up to 72 and 190kW, respectively.

Both come with a range of drive ratios and their twin countershaft design lets full power be transmitted ahead or astern, with either left or right hand propellers.

They also incorporate hydraulically-operated, adjustment-free multi-disc clutches, which provide rapid response to movements of the control lever for good boat handling and manoeuvrability.
