Dutch builders adopt propulsion control system

A Newage Transmissions product story

The MPC marine propulsion control system has gone "double Dutch" with the installation of the initial pair of production units in vessels built in the Netherlands.

Newage Transmissions' recently announced MPC (Marine Propulsion Control) system has gone "double Dutch" with the installation of the company's initial pair of production units in vessels built in the Netherlands.

The first unit was incorporated in a 27 metre sailing yacht built by prestige Dutch boatbuilder, Jongert.

Powered by a Steyr engine, the vessel incorporates a Newage PRM 750 D4 gearbox, which runs a continuously driven power take-off (PTO) for operating onboard hydraulic equipment.

The gearbox was selected with an optional MPC package specifically to avoid the need to increase propeller speed when the vessel's bow thruster and other ancillary machinery are in use.

On engagement of any hydraulic equipment, the MPC system automatically raises engine speed to 1300rev/min, while simultaneously activating the gearbox's trolling function to maintain slow propeller rotation.

The MPC's controls enable the boat's propeller speed to be varied independently of onboard hydraulic power demands - to ensure excellent boat control, particularly when manoeuvring in busy marinas or berths.

In parallel, the system guarantees that adequate power is always available to operate auxiliary equipment, even at extremely low propeller speeds.

The second Newage MPC installation was in a Dutch-built Aquanaut cruiser equipped with a Perkins-Sabre M235 engine and PRM1000 gearbox operating a clutched PTO.

Again, the MPC system was chosen to provide excellent low speed manoeuvrability in locks or on canals, as well as additional power and speed to cope with strong river or sea currents.

"Both of these applications underline the advantages of controlling engine and gearbox outputs independently", says Newage's Marine Products Sales Manager, Jamie Pratt.

"In addition, gearboxes fitted with the new MPC option provide progressive gear engagement, for reduced component wear and increased comfort".

"The system is also suitable for single, twin and fly-bridge controls and its software is easily configured to suit any vessel - allowing the sizing of hydraulic pumps and accessories to be optimised and enabling the use of more powerful ancillary equipment in many cases".

"There has been an enormous amount of interest in the MPC since its preproduction launch earlier this year".

"I am therefore confident that these first installations in the Netherlands will be the forerunners of many new orders over the coming months".
