Analyser eases alloy verification

A Niton UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 31, 2007

The XLt alloy analyser allows Gammax to offer a service that can be seen to be completely accurate, as well as being far quicker.

Alloy verification is one of the nondestructive testing services offered by Gammax Independent Inspection Services.

The company provides this service for suppliers to the oil and petrochemical industries, as well as valve companies in the process industries, structural steel engineers and the power industry.

To analyse the alloys, Gammax used to use an optical emission spectroscopy instrument.

However, this technique had the disadvantage of needing a trained operator to evaluate the results, which required a certain degree of interpretation.

Now, thanks to the purchase of an XLt alloy analyser from Niton UK, the company is able to offer a service that can be seen to be completely accurate, as well as being far quicker.

Gammax Managing Director Bill Brennan said: "With the instrument I was using previously, customers could never be 100% happy because they had to take my word for the readings".

"Now with the Niton XLt, I just pull the trigger and they can see the result in front of them".

The Niton UK instrument operates on the principle of x-ray fluorescence, which operates by using x-rays to excite the atoms in the sample and measuring the fluorescent x-rays re-emitted by the material.

From this it rapidly determines the elements present as well as their relative concentrations.

In addition, for samples with known ranges of chemical composition, such as common grades of metal alloys, the analyser can also identify most sample types by name, typically in seconds.

As well as alloy verification services, Gammax provides a full range of NDT services including radiology, ultrasonics and magnetic particle inspection.

Other applications for the XLt range from simple metal sorting through to sophisticated elemental soil analysis and decontamination control.

The instruments are also suitable for checking RoHS and WEEE compliance, scrap metal recycling, lead paint analysis and precious metals analysis and are rugged enough for use in mining and prospecting.
