The UK's National Weights and Measures Laboratory has officially re-opened its calibration facilities in Teddington, Middlesex.

The National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML), an Executive Agency of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), has officially re-opened its calibration facilities in Teddington, Middlesex This major refurbishment project has been carried out since NWML experienced extensive flood damage in 2004

The new facilities have been completely modernised, providing UK customers with one of the finest laboratories in the world in terms of accuracy and reliability.

NWML received UKAS accreditation for mass calibration above E1 level, which represents the highest metrological accuracy level possible for mass calibration.

NWML has invested heavily in the new laboratory and now has a range of machinery which can calibrate an extensive variety of products for its customers.

These include new balances which can collectively calibrate weights ranging from up to 64kg down to 1mg.

The lower weight balances have a readability of 0.1ug.

Accurate calibration provides an invaluable service to several industries in the UK, especially to the pharmaceutical industry where peoples' health depends on the very accurate measurement methods used.

NWML's facilities serve customers in numerous market sectors, and includes work as diverse as calibration of crash test dummies to the weighing of parts of aircraft undercarriages.

NWML tours all UK local authorities to calibrate mass, length and volume standards, ensuring that all calibration activities completed in the UK for trade purposes are being traced back to NWML.

Other customers include tape manufacturers and the petrochemical industry, where NWML is responsible for calibrating dip tapes used for large oil refinery tanks to measure oil levels.

"We are delighted to finally unveil these new facilities which will provide our existing and prospective customers with unrivalled service and support", commented John Pain, Business Team Manager, Calibration, NWML.

"Our calibration laboratories are now one of the finest in the world, and I'm incredibly excited about the extent of our offering from this point forward".
