Norgren has developed a 63mm ISO/VDMA cylinder with sensors to monitor the position of the piston rod, ideal for applications requiring two or more movements

Global pneumatics expert Norgren has developed a 63mm ISO/VDMA cylinder with sensors to monitor the position of the piston rod.

The SMART cylinder and built-in 5/2 or 5/3 valve are monitored and controlled by an integrated AS-i bus.

Product manager Dietmar Grun said the product was ideal for applications requiring two or more movements.

"As well as having a stand-alone capability, the SMART cylinder can also be used in conjunction with our other intelligent products - the V20/22 range of valves and our intelligent FRLs", he said.

Thousands of pounds in operational costs can be saved by using intelligent products, which can send messages predicting impending valve failure through a fieldbus system.

This allows preventative maintenance to be carried out in scheduled downtime, eliminating expensive, unscheduled delays.

The SMART cylinder has a stroke of between 200mm and 3,000 mm.

Connection is made simple by the fact that all necessary connection elements are integrated in the actuator, requiring only one pneumatic connection and one electric connection.
