The new AST3 IS weight transmitter from Nobel Systems is now CENELEC approved for use with load cells and weighing systems that are located in hazardous areas.

The transmitter, which meets Intrinsic Safety EEx ia requirements, contains its own unique power-limiting circuits, which eliminate the need to use external intermediate zener safety barriers or galvanic isolators.

The design means no safety earth is required (as there is normally with zener barriers) so there is a considerable saving on the expense and trouble of extra wiring.

This design also means that the weight transmitter allows a load cell energisation voltage at the strain gauge load cell that is at least 2.5 times higher than with zeners and consequently provides a higher output signal, higher resolution and improved accuracy and stability.

CE marked and fully compliant with the EMC and low voltage directives, the AST3 IS converts the output from the load cells into very stable digital and high level analogue signals, and is used typically in applications where weighing systems, that are in hazardous areas, need to communicate to a host computer or PLC.

The AST3 IS communicates digitally with RS 485 and MODBUS RTU protocol at up to 115kbaud and can also be connected to most other existing fieldbuses via the Nobel gateway fieldbus translator module, GATE3.

Programmable analogue outputs of 4-20mA or 0-20mA or 0-10V are standard, as are two relay outputs having a response time of less than 20ms for use in high precision level control applications.

The set-up and calibration procedure is all digital and easily configured either from the front panel digital display, or by using Nobel's Windows-based deltaCOM software that is supplied free with the AST3.

All set-up data can be loaded to or from, and stored in, the host computer and downloaded to any of the AST3 IS transmitters.

This transmitter has at its heart a unique Nobel patented 23-bit Sigma-Delta A/D converter with over 8,000,000 counts internal resolution.

This advanced technology provides both analogue (0 toń10Vd.c., 0 to 20mA, or 4 to 20mA) and digital (RS485/MODBUS) outputs.

Due to the continuous integration of the input signals, that offer extra efficient filtering, these outputs are filtered and configured separately to give the user accurate, stable and rapid response measurement information.

Linearity is better than 0.01% of range for the analogue output and better than 0.005% for the digital output.

The AST3 IS is compatible with all other instruments in the Nobel "3" family of Weight Indicators, Transmitters and input/output modules and is DIN rail mounted and 24Vd.c.

powered.
