Thermo Nobel has added a high-level-output option to its KOSD double shear pin load cell.

Thermo Nobel has added a high-level-output option to its KOSD double shear pin load cell.

This option is available as a two-wire 4-20mA signal with the design Cenelec approved as Intrinsically Safe for use in flammable hazardous areas.

This new output development means that there are savings in cable costs, as only two core screened cable is required, and allows the use of the KOSD without the need for any other signal conditioning, apart from a power supply of 24-36V Sealed to IP67 requirements, the KOSD is of a compact double shear pin design and available in capacities from 500kN to 2MN (50 to 200t).

It is for use primarily in high integrity crane, winch and tensioner force measurement applications in the offshore and nuclear industries.

An example of this use is the support of the whole top crown block assembly, including its multiple sheaves, on offshore oil drilling derricks.

When this is achieved, it allows the weighing of the whole drill string as it is raised in the well, each time drill pipe is added.

More importantly, it permits the monitoring of the 'weight on bit', when the drill is lowered, so that optimum drill bit penetration can be achieved.

This application, featured in the picture, uses four KOSD 101 2MN, allowing weights up to 800t to be monitored.
