The POS-microPOS is a novel control system for position control of pope reels.

The POS-microPOS is a novel control system for position control of pope reels.

The system controls the speed and position of the primary arms, thus ensuring gentle and parallel lowering of the arms.

With web tension systems, acceleration is controlled and disturbances minimised.

This, in turn, minimises the risk of wrinkling and breaks in the paper, as the system controls the speed and the positioning guide sides for parallel lowering.

Parameters are set simply via a PC and this setting of these parameters along with simple calibration ensures fast installation.

The settings can be stored on the PC while a systems menu provides quick checking of the system status during operation and service.

The overall system comprises: the POS-microPOS electronics unit, two valves to control the oil flow for rising and lowering the arms, and a position transducer for each side with output signals that give position feedback values.

The system operates as follows.

When a "down" command from the operator is received, the system starts a motion with controlled acceleration up to the set speed, bringing the primary arms to the take-over position.

After the take-over, the operator sends a new "down" command.

The system starts again with controlled acceleration up to the set speed.

When the primary arms reach the set position for low speed, the system changes, with a controlled deceleration, to the lower speed.

This is the speed of the primary arms at contact with the rails.

When the operator gives a "stop" command, the primary arms stop with set retardation and then remain in their positions.

While, if an "up" command is received from the operator, the system starts a motion to the upper position with controlled acceleration up to the set speed.

Set values can be selected either internally or externally via Modbus.
