Project to address floating production
systems
A new joint industry project will address safe floating production operations for the oil industry.
In the last decade there has been a shift away from traditional, bottom-based offshore production platforms to floating systems As this technology has grown the offshore industry has gained valuable experience of safe floating production operations

Former chairman of Noble Denton has died
The ex-chairman and the original driving force behind the Noble Denton group passed away on Sunday evening 4 March 2001.
In April 2001, the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) commissioned Noble Denton Europe to pull together lessons that have been learned from one essential aspect of floating production, namely the design, construction and operation of UK sector mooring systems.
The study concluded that practice to date has, in general, effectively addressed health, safety and environmental (HSE) risks associated with mooring systems, but there are still clear opportunities to reduce commercial exposures and improve HSE risk levels.
Hence, Noble Denton is now launching a joint industry project (JIP) to concentrate on the areas which can be further improved.
JIPs provide a cost-effective mechanism for a number of interested companies to pool together resources to provide collectively sufficient funding to tackle a subject in depth.
At the end of the project the results of the work are available to all the participants.
Key areas that will be investigated in the new work include: a breakdown of some of the problems which have occurred and their causes; assessment of the health, safety, environmental and commercial consequences of line failure; investigation of the design and selection of mooring connectors and interfaces; mooring line status monitoring and prompt detection of line failure; inspection, refurbishment and maintenance options including in water techniques; and sparing provisions.
The project builds on Noble Denton's experience on operational FPS mooring integrity from a number of North Sea projects, while gathering international experience from areas such as offshore Africa, South America, Canada and the Gulf of Mexico.
A kick off meeting to launch the JIP is due to be held on Thursday 6th February.
It is open to oil companies, design/installation contractors, classification authorities, equipment manufacturers, survey companies and consultancies.
Ticket prices depend on the type of subscribing organisation and range from GBP 3000 to GBP 15,000.
