Burnley College are preparing to welcome their students to the new centre, which will host their new technology education and training programmes including a suite of degrees and diplomas.

All the college's higher-level new technology qualifications will be run in association with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

Programmes range from Media Design and Technology to Business Information Technology and Computer Aided Engineering.

A recent OFSTED inspection graded the IT provision "Outstanding" (grade 1) so students will benefit from the best teaching in a state-of the-art learning environment, according to Alan Hicks, Director of Information and Learning Technology: "The opening of this centre provides a landmark in the accommodation strategy for Burnley College and offers state of the art IT facilities for our students".

Business support specialist Northern Technologies has already moved its technical services division to the new development, creating its "Advanced Manufacturing Centre".

Already over 100 manufacturers have visited the centre, with Business Development Director Steve Wilkinson keen to ensure it effectively supports manufacturers and drives them into thinking differently about the future: "The centre addresses the three major manufacturing issues head on - skills, new product development and technology exploitation".

Christopher Baxter has been appointed to manage the whole centre and is in the process of showing prospective tenants around the managed office space, which is now completed.

A range of units are now available on a 12-month lease, with support and expertise on hand to help fledgling businesses.

Managed by Lancashire County Developments, the site sits alongside the company's two business parks at White Cross in Lancaster and the Lancashire Business Park at Leyland and adds to the company's range of office and workshop space available to Lancashire companies.

Earlier this month, Bob Wilcox, Director of Michelin Developments returned to the site for the first time since the doors closed at the factory, to see the transformation for himself.

He said he was impressed by the scale of the project and the facilities, which have been created: "It's a great location for small enterprising businesses to become established - the centre is a huge opportunity, truly a credit to Burnley and Lancashire".

The centre's construction costs of GBP 3.9 million have been funded by GBP 2 million from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), the European Regional Development Fund and Lancashire County Developments.
