They are also left exposed to the elements for long periods.
Despite these hardships equipment reliability is excellent.
One major reason for this is the sealing system used on the Self-Lube bearings.

Positioning technology allows microscopic handling
NSK's micro-manipulation system features a three-axis (XYZ) positioning stage that facilitates the attachment of measuring devices, micromanipulators and microscopes for examining a preparation.
Its effectiveness can be judged from the fact that Farm Force has machines in the field that have provided trouble-free service for 7 and 8 years.
Farm Force is a technically innovative British company that produces probably the largest and most ruggedly constructed range of Furrow, Trailed and Front presses on the market.
The presses are closely matched to a customer's needs via an interface both at factory level and via a technical team that spends a lot of time in the field to make sure that machines supplied give maximum performance.
All of the presses manufactured by Farm Force are equipped with RHP's Self-Lube bearings.
Farm Force started using Self-Lube bearings over 10 years ago because, according to Buyer Ken Bell, "they were the best quality bearing on the market".
The conditions under which Farm Force's presses operate are always arduous: often very wet and at other times dirty and dusty.
Even when not being used they are often left outside and have to contend with the constantly changing British climate.
Despite these demanding conditions Farm Force have experienced very few failures with RHP's Self-Lube bearings.
"We've machines that have been out in the field for 7 or 8 years with no problems at all", said Ken Bell.
Mr Bell cites the effectiveness of the Self-Lube bearing sealing system as one of the main reasons for the high levels of reliability.
The Self-Lube range is widely used in tough operating environments so there is a choice of sealing systems to give optimum protection under different conditions.
The standard seal, up to and including 40mm bore, is the S type.
Above that the standard is the M type.
In addition, there is the Flinger seal for more hostile environments.
The Flinger seal provides increased levels of protection without any loss of rated bearing speed due to the non-contacting Flinger Seal lip.
It provides a first line barrier against contamination and thus improves bearing life.
Due to the arduous environment in which their machinery operates, Farm Force fit RHP Self-Lube Bearings with triple lip seals as standard to protect the bearing and extend its life.
The triple lip seal offers the highest levels of protection with three sealing lips which contact the bearing inner ring.
There is a consequent reduction in rated speed as a result of this configuration, but in the applications where the seal is most used - on agricultural machinery for example - this is not usually a problem. Request a free brochure from NSK UK ...
