An eco-friendly driverless taxi is closer to accepting its first fares thanks to a GBP 125,000 award from NESTA's (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) Invention and Innovation programme, the largest early stage funder in the UK Advanced Transport Systems has been developing a prototype of the Urban Light Transport System (ULTra), which drives itself and avoids traffic jams, and has recently completed successful passenger trials at their test track in Cardiff

This marks the first step in a radical new direction in the development of a personal and environmentally friendly public transport.

ATS received an initial GBP 75,000 NESTA Invention and Innovation award in May 2000, to develop the idea through undertaking essential market and business development work.

The additional funding will go towards the business development of the project, bringing in the necessary expertise to promote this groundbreaking technology to various worldwide markets.

Once introduced, the futuristic system will transport up to four people at a time to their destination non-stop at a speed of 40km/h, on a dedicated guideway.

Lord Puttnam, said: "ULTra was one of the very first awards announced by NESTA and we are delighted to be in a position to continue our support to ensure that it has every chance of future success".
