North Tyneside College has just signed a partnership agreement with SMC Pneumatics (UK) to develop skills needed by the region's manufacturing industry This is a further step forward in North Tyneside College's efforts to develop a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in mechatronics

SMC will provide equipment to meet the specific requirements of a mechatronics centre.

This new mechatronics centre will be the first of its kind in the region and combines mechanical engineering, electronics, IT and process manufacturing.

Les Walton, principal of North Tyneside College said: "We have looked to develop a strategic partnership with a major industrial supplier, who would support this initiative fully.

SMC has proven to be the best partner for us and they have committed themselves to provide real industry components as well as resources to North Tyneside College".

Martin Bevan, SMC's business development manager for the Training and Education project, added: "This mechatronics project is a new business opportunity for SMC.

We are pleased to be associated with the development of the first CoVE in mechatronics in the country".

A steering group from industry identified mechatronics as a requirement for the North East to create the workers for 2010 and beyond.

Companies that work actively with North Tyneside College to develop best practice curriculum include Atmel, Draeger, Merck Sharp and Dohme, Pfizer, Railway Performance, Sanofi Winthrop, SCA and Twinings.

The mechatronics centre will allow organisations to train their existing and new staff to technician level and to make them multidisciplined.

The development of North Tyneside College's CoVE in mechatronics is supported by the Learning and Skills Council Tyne and Wear.
