Encoder boosts productivity of
conservatories

A digital encoder and readout system from Newall Measurement Systems Ltd has enabled York-based manufacturer Link Conservatory Systems to increase productivity by 30%.

A digital encoder and readout system from Newall Measurement Systems Ltd has enabled York-based manufacturer Link Conservatory Systems to increase productivity by 30% Link Conservatory Systems, which manufactures conservatory roofs for the window industry, invested in the Newall system to complete the conversion of an old double-headed saw into a single-headed saw

"We manufacture conservatory roofs in aluminium and PVC.

In order to cut the aluminium and PVC material to length we use a pull-down, cut-off circular saw.

The company has experienced a 50% growth in the past 12 months and this was one operation that needed to speed up", explains David Nellis, Managing Director of Link Conservatory Systems.

"The saw was originally a double-headed saw which we modified to suit our current operation.

We removed one of the heads and replaced the old measuring scale, which had become worn and difficult to read, with a linear measuring device and digital readout to act as a stop".

The saw manufacturer was able to provide a stop for approximately GBP 4000 to GBP 5000.

Newall supplied Link with an SA100 digital readout and a 4m Magnasyn tape for just GBP 1000.

"It was easy to be a millimetre out either way with our old measuring system, particularly if the operator wasn't looking directly at the scale.

With the SA100 digital readout we can spin the head around to face whichever way the operator is.

This allows us to achieve far greater levels of accuracy.

With an ordinary mechanical scale you're only accurate to within a millimetre, with the Newall system we can achieve accuracy in the region of 0.2mm", said Nellis.

Newall's Magnasyn encoder is specifically designed to address the problem of measuring uneven or circular machine movement by featuring a flexible magnetic rubber strip, which is sandwiched between a backing strip and a thin, protective cover strip made of stainless steel.

The ingenious design is not only incredibly flexible, it can also withstand exposure to a range of aggressive elements - including dust, dirt and oil - and has received an IP67 approval rating.

The reader head provides an accuracy level of +/-25um and +/-20um/m.

The SA100 is an ideal readout for use with the Magnasyn encoder, offering a five year warranty that is unrivalled in the industry and features benefits ranging from scale factoring, linear compensation, axis resolution and head fail detection to standard inch/metric and reference functions.

Not only does the Newall equipment afford greater accuracy, it also allows operators to work faster.

In addition, the Newall system is so easy to use that it negates the need for a skilled operator; anyone can use the system.

Nellis concludes: "The Newall representative we dealt with was very knowledgeable, helping us get the new equipment up and running in no time.

In the near future we will be modifying another machine which will be used for cutting compound angles on rafter end caps, this will require a rotary measuring device for which we will be approaching Newall again". Request a free brochure from Newall Measurement Systems ...
