Newall Measurement Systems has launched the first absolute linear encoder to incorporate an AC inductive-technology measuring system that relies on a ball-based design The Spherosyn Absolute delivers incredibly fast and accurate measurements for CNC systems, pick-and-place machines and automotive transfer lines by reacquiring its true position without having to return to a datum point

In essence, the Spherosyn Absolute determines its exact position by registering coded markers that are sandwiched between nickel-chrome steel balls housed in its stainless steel tube.

This instantaneous measurement can be made even following an emergency stop, a shift changeover or an overnight break, thereby quickening the restart and establishing a more efficient operation.

Based on Newall's renowned digital technology, the Spherosyn Absolute is a practical and convenient measurement platform that offers resolutions to 0.1um and an accuracy range from +/-10 down to +/-3um.

The versatile encoder, which has a top traverse rate of 60m/sec, is ideally suited for applications characterised by high-speed, repetitive movements or where machine datum operations are overly time consuming.

As the reader head is also sealed to an IP67 rating - making it fully submersible and resilient against oil, dust, coolant and other workshop contaminants - the Spherosyn Absolute is not only accurate and quick, it is also extremely reliable in even the most aggressive operating environments.

Bob Massam, Sales and Marketing Director at Newall, revealed how the new ball-based system has established a new standard of accurate and reliable machine tool measurement.

"The Spherosyn Absolute's unique ball-and-insert configuration has created a system that meets the level of accuracy and durability normally associated with Newall encoders.

However, it has also taken the Spherosyn family of products to the next developmental stage by offering the greater levels of efficiency which can be derived from absolute measurements".

The durable Spherosyn Absolute is constructed from a stainless-steel linear scale, which contains a column of steel balls separated by scaled inserts.

An aluminium-cast reader head, containing a coil assembly, supporting electronics and sensor array, completes the setup.

The system's ingenious combination of durability, repeatability and accuracy means it delivers a cost-effective, absolute measurement solution. Request a free brochure from Newall Measurement Systems ...
