They say time is money.
For specialist press manufacturer Long SA, time has recently become a defining characteristic of its extensive client list that includes manufacturers from the car, jewellery and optical instrument sectors.
A recent project addressed the specific demands of the lucrative watch-making industry and the design of a purpose-built machine incorporating the latest digital readout (DRO) and digital encoder technology supplied by Newall Measurement Systems.
"We started using Newall's equipment two years ago", explains Stephane Long, President of Long SA which is located in Marigny St Marcel, France.
"We used the equipment to meet the requirements of a Swiss customer - the Swatch Group.
The aim was to replace the group's existing machinery with new presses featuring state-of-the-art technology".
The new mechanical presses, featuring Newall's SA100 single axis DRO and robust, ball-based Spherosyn encoder, were an overwhelming success and Long soon received calls to introduce the machine to a wider audience.
"Our agent in Switzerland asked us to produce a special press for the general watch-making industry".
The result was a 15-tonne, high-performance cutting press that quickly became one of the main attractions at the annual watch-making fair that is held in Basel, Switzerland.
"We exhibit the press at the Basel Show every year.
It gives us a lot of contacts, especially because of Newall's equipment".
Newall's impressive SA100 features a number of functions that makes it an ideal measuring solution for applications demanding high levels of accuracy.
For instance, the versatile DRO incorporates scale factoring, linear compensation, axis resolution and head-fail detection, as well as resolution settings ranging from 0.1 to 10um.
Housed in a rugged case with a wipe-clean front panel, the SA100 provides Long's customers with a clear readout of the equipment's critical ram function.
Used in conjunction with Newall's IP67-rated Microsyn linear encoder, the SA100 forms an important part of the measuring system that is completely sealed against oil, coolant and workshop contaminants.
More importantly, with no easily damaged components, both units can be mounted quickly reducing fitting times and increasing machine-tool efficiencies.
For watchmakers, Newall's equipment enables remarkably quick tool changeovers.
"Newall's DRO and digital encoder permit quick adjustments by measuring and displaying the defined value of the ram.
For example, for each tool the customer knows he has to select a stroke value and adjust the ram to a predefined value.
Without Newall's equipment, he would have to confirm each new adjustment by creating a new piece.
This would be time-consuming and costly".
Stephane Long continues: "The main benefit to our customers is the speed at which adjustments can be made.
For us, it exemplifies our ability to introduce the latest technological developments on our products.
Since we've experienced no problems with the presses following the introduction of the DRO and linear encoder technology, we'll continue to use Newall for the foreseeable future". Request a free brochure from Newall Measurement Systems ...
